Root Canal Treatment

At SJ Dental in Twinsburg, we save infected teeth from extraction with comfortable, efficient root canal treatment. If you shudder at the very thought, we understand. Just know that advances in modern dentistry make the procedure more comfortable and efficient than ever.

Why Is Root Canal Therapy Necessary?

Our dentists recommend root canal therapy when the tooth's pulp becomes inflamed or infected. Pulp consists of blood vessels and nerves and is found at the very center of your tooth. The area is normally well protected, but bacteria can enter it due to deep decay, dental trauma, or failing dental work.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call us right away at (330) 888-1326 so we can schedule you for an emergency appointment.

  • Jaw pain or swelling
  • Excruciating tooth pain
  • Lingering sensitivity to touch and temperature
  • A raised bump or “pimple” on the gums
  • A terrible odor or taste in your mouth

Benefits of Prompt Root Canal Treatment

When you're dealing with an infected tooth, getting treatment quickly makes all the difference for your comfort and overall health and well-being. Here's why acting fast matters:

Immediate Pain Relief

The moment we administer local anesthesia, you'll experience lasting relief from the pain that's disrupting your life. You may have some mild soreness after the procedure, but it's nothing compared to the agony of an infected tooth.

Protect Overall Health

An untreated tooth infection doesn't stay localized. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream and spread to other parts of the body, leading to serious complications, including heart problems, brain abscesses, and life-threatening sepsis.

Save the Natural Tooth

Root canal therapy allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than losing it to extraction. Preserving your natural tooth maintains your bite alignment, prevents teeth from shifting, and eliminates the need for tooth replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saving your natural tooth with a root canal is almost always preferable to extraction. Keeping teeth intact helps prevent neighboring teeth from tilting and moving into the space, thereby eliminating the need for complex tooth replacement options. Your natural tooth is designed to last a lifetime, and root canal treatment gives it that chance.

Root Canals vs. Tooth Extraction

There are several reasons why root canal treatment is preferable to extraction:

  • Natural Chewing Function — Nothing works quite like your natural tooth. Root canal treatment maintains normal biting force and efficient chewing, allowing you to continue enjoying all your favorite foods.
  • Jawbone Health and Facial Structure — Your tooth root stimulates your jawbone, keeping it strong and healthy. Removing the tooth results in lost stimulation, which can lead to bone loss that may eventually affect your facial appearance and complicate future tooth replacements.
  • Cost-Effectiveness — A root canal with a crown often costs significantly less than an implant or bridge, and the process typically requires fewer appointments. Plus, many dental insurance plans cover a substantial portion of root canal treatment.

If you're worried about pain, the fact is that root canals don't cause pain—they relieve it. With modern techniques and anesthesia, most patients report that the procedure feels about as involved as getting a filling.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

If you experience any of the above symptoms, it's crucial to call us as soon as possible to schedule an emergency root canal. While we may not have time to complete the procedure that day, we will relieve your pain and stabilize the situation until we can schedule full treatment. Postponing treatment only leads to worsening symptoms and eventual tooth loss; even worse, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and impact other parts of your body.

You can expect our dentists to perform the following steps during your root canal:

  1. First, we ensure your comfort by administering a potent local anesthetic. We won’t proceed until we are certain that the treatment area is completely numb.
  2. Next, our dentists access the pulp chamber inside your tooth. Instead of traditional manual files, we use leading-edge rotary endodontic technology to clear away the infected pulp comfortably and efficiently.
  3. With the pulp removed, our dentists fill the root canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, then seal the tooth with a temporary filling.

After Root Canal Treatment

You can expect a few days of soreness after your root canal, but it’s usually easy to control with OTC pain medications. Give your body time to rest, avoid heavy exercise, and stay away from extremely hot or cold foods that could irritate the tooth. Continue to brush and floss as you usually do.

Approximately two weeks after your procedure, you will return to SJ Dental so we can place either a final filling or crown to protect the tooth.
